The dominant character from the Quilceda Creek 2000 Merlot is derived from the
terroir of the low yielding merlot and cabernet from the Ciel du Cheval Vineyard
located in the heart of the Red Mountain AVA. We consider this vineyard to be the
Haut Brion of Washington because of the complex nature of the wines derived from
its gravelly Scootenay soil. This wine is filled with blackberries, smoked meat,
scorched earth, semi-sweet chocolate, minerals and spice.
2000 Merlot
Ruby-red. Nuanced aromas of black raspberry, blackcurrant, licorice, tobacco leaf and
smoky oak. Suave and sweet, but with sound acidity and solid spine. Complex flavors
of black plum, bitter chocolate, minerals, tobacco leaf and fresh herbs. A merlot of
modoerate density, finishing with a firm tannic edge.

Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar
The dark ruby-colored 2000 Merlot (only 250 cases) is more tannic and rustic that what
is typically found at Quilceda Creek. Produced primarily from Ceil du Cheval Vineyard fruit
(66%), it exhibits waxy, spicy blackberry aromas. On the palate, this firm, medium-bodied
wine offers outstanding purity and focus. Black currants, cassis, and black cherries can
be discerned in its foursquare character. Projected maturity: 2005-2013.
Quilceda Creek did not produce a Merlot in 2001 according to Alex Golitzin.
