2016 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

Paul Golitzin, Director of Winemaking, comments:

We are pleased to announce the private release of our 2016 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley. 2016 marks the 38th vintage of Quilceda Creek since its founding in 1978. Since the beginning, our family has been singularly focused on the pursuit of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2016 vintage was stellar due to warm summer growing conditions and cool temperatures in the fall, which extended hang-time and developed complex aromatics and flavors. Winemaker Paul Golitzin describes the wine's texture as luxurious, with layer upon layer of rich and concentrated crème de cassis, blackberry and black plum fruit coating the palate with a deep, memorable impact. Nuances of violet, anise, leather, dark chocolate, black truffle and minerals can also be found in this incredibly pure wine of great power and finesse. It will drink well on release and over the next 2-3 decades.

International Wine Report Review

"The 2016 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a simply stunning and seamless release from Quilceda Creek. Winemaker Paul Golitzin has crafted an absolute beauty from this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that was sourced from the Champoux, Wallula and Lake Wallula Vineyards and was aged in 100% new French oak prior to bottling. On the nose this takes on wonderful toasty oak character that wraps around blueberry compote, Turkish coffee, with shades of violets, exotic spices, anise and sagebrush accents. The balance and silky texture imparted in the wine is scintillating. Layers of mocha, blueberry cordial, sagebrush, crème de cassis and shades of eucalyptus flavors all marvelously combine on the palate and build up to the exceedingly long finish. Tasted this wine over several hours it becomes more approachable and harmonious after some time in the glass. A true tour de force, the 2016 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is amongst with the finest wines ever made from this estate. Drink 2020 – 2040"

Jeb Dunnuck Review

"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley is a beautiful wine and has a more classic profile than the more sexy, massive 2015. Beautiful notes of creme de cassis, lead pencil shavings, graphite, dried herbs, and loamy earth all flow to a full-bodied, incredibly pure and perfectly balanced Cabernet Sauvignon that has no hard edges, a deep, concentrated mid-palate, good acidity, and a great, great finish. It reminds me of the 2002 with its uber classic, balanced yet broad and powerful style."

Vinous Review

"Moderately saturated dark red with ruby tones. Classic, complex Cabernet scents of black fruits, cocoa powder and sexy herbs lifted by a strong mineral component; the high-quality Taransaud and Darnajou barrels come through clearly but not loudly. Wonderfully smooth, tight-grained wine with gloriously ripe but not roasted flavors of wild blackberry, cassis, bitter chocolate and minerals. Harmonious ripe acidity gives this wine outstanding finesse and lifts the fruit. I find this wine more relaxed than the superb 2015 version, perhaps because there was little in the way of vine stress in '16. Perhaps most impressive in the early going on the extremely long, slowly building back end, which features noble tannins, great suavity and outstanding lift. (3.97 pH; made from Palengat, Champoux and Wallula vineyards, all in Horse Heaven Hills, but the label for this wine has said Columbia Valley for a long time; in an earlier era the label used the even more generic Washington State appellation). Drink 2023-2036"

Wine Advocate Review

"The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon has a ripe nose with a precise core of generous, healthy and robust red and black fruits. Bursting from the glass, chocolate-covered black cherries with elegant blackberry tones effortlessly strut their stuff next to seductive tones of French oak spices and subtle savory and floral tones. Full-bodied, the wine turns a touch tart in the mouth, with a focused acid structure balanced by lush tannins. The mid-palate is perfectly balanced, with rich dark cherry notes framing the oak expressions. The ripe core of fruit and oak dance vibrantly on the long, elaborate and generous finish, and the aftertaste lingers on for more than a minute after the wine has left the palate. This is a stunning and impressive wine in this vintage, one for collectors to take note of and seek out. 4,975 cases were produced. Drink 2019-2040"
